Throughout the past decade, current and former Pitt football players have had their share on run-ins with the law.
That negative trend continued on Monday when former Pitt football player Jovani Chappel was arrested after a bank robbery in Greenfield Monday morning.
Chappel, 25,was arrested around 1:30 p.m. in connection with a robbery of a PNC Bank branch in the 4300 block of Murray Avenue in Greenfield about 10:40 a.m. Police spotted him sitting on the front porch of a home in the 5000 block of Lytle Street in Hazelwood, Pittsburgh police major crimes unit Lt. Kevin Kraus said.
He reportedly wore a mask and threatened tellers with a gun then hopped over the counter and took cash from several of the tellers’ drawers and then got into a car and drove away.
A witness reportedly took down Chappel’s license plate where police tracked the car back to his girlfriend’s house. A SWAT team surrounded that house but Chappel was apprehended while sitting on the front porch of a home about two blocks away.
He was taken in for questioning and is expected to be charged with robbery.
While at Pitt, Chappel played in 37 games over a four-year career as a defensive back at Pitt from 2006-09. He totaled 123 tackles and two interceptions. As a senior, he led the Panthers with 10 pass breakups.
