Four Penn State football players were arrested and charged with criminal mischief late Thursday evening.
Sophomore tight end Brent Wilkerson, 20, of Clinton, Maryland, sophomore safety Anthony Smith, 21, of Dover, New Jersey, sophomore center Wendy Laurent, 20, of Hamilton, New Jersey, and freshman defensive end Garrett Sickels, 20, of Red Bank, New Jersey were all charged after an “egg-throwing incident” outside of Beaver Hall on Thursday night between 10:36 p.m. and 11:18 p.m.
The players were caught after a student reported university property damage to the Penn State Police. James Franklin is aware of the situation and addressed the issue in an email through assistant athletic director Jeff Nelson.
“We are aware of the egg throwing situation that occurred Thursday evening and will determine the appropriate measures for the four squad members involved.”
This will be Franklin’s first time dealing with an off-field issue at Penn State, but he did not hand down any suspensions during his tenure at Vanderbilt, other than the 2013 alleged rape case.
Laurent was expected to see more action this weekend against Maryland after Donovan Smith was injured in the fourth quarter against Ohio State, but his potential playing time is now questionable in light of this recent incident. Laurent is currently listed as second-team center on the depth chart. Smith’s current status is unknown, but he’s made three appearances on special teams. Sickles has played in all seven games on the season and Wilkerson has two catches for 18 yards and a touchdown against Massachusetts.
