Pittsburgh Penguins (4-2)
The Penguins are coming off of a heartbreaking loss. While it looked like they were going to come back from an early deficit, Pittsburgh failed to convert on some prime opportunities and got roughed around a bit. Still, the Penguins’ offense looked as good as it has all season.
The defense, however, didn’t look good, and it could prove to be Pittsburgh’s biggest disadvantage for the remainder of this series. The Penguins will need to work on escaping hits and on hitting back to put more pressure on Washington.
Now, the Penguins have to focus on Game 2 and must steal a game before the series heads to Pittsburgh.
Washington Capitals (5-2)
The Capitals battled all game, and they capped it off with an overtime goal by T.J. Oshie. Washington took advantage of Pittsburgh’s miscues and had several chances to separate themselves by more than just a goal. Goaltender Braden Holtby showed some cracks in his game, but he rebounded in overtime to deny the Penguins the chance to take Game 1.
The Capitals looked winded and exhausted trying to chase the Penguins, but Washington’s ability to force Pittsburgh against the boards and knock the puck loose created a significant advantage. Washington has had a great season thus far and will look to continue its ways in Game 2.
Prediction
This game is a must-win for the Penguins; being in a two-game hole against Washington would be incredibly difficult for the Penguins to overcome. With a win in Game 2, Pittsburgh will not only show its resolve, but prove the team is equals to the Capitals.
Head coach Mike Sullivan will motivate the Penguins to put up a great effort against a great team and will win Game 2, 5-4.
