For the first time since 1971, the Pittsburgh Steelers have the National Football League’s top ranked passing defense in terms of yards allowed per game. When thinking about the Steelers defensive backfield, most think about the miraculous plays of Troy Polamalu or the devastating hits that safety Ryan Clark lays out. However, most people don’t realize how much of a defensive salt-wort 10-year corner Ike Taylor is. I am going to go out on a limb here and say, Taylor is the most important player the Steelers defense puts on the field week in and week out.
Besides the fact that Taylor goes up against the opposing team’s top receiver each week, his durability has proven to be his greatest asset. In his 10 years with the Steelers, Taylor has missed four games. Compare this to Polamalu and Clark who have missed a combined total of 64 games since the 2002. Polamalu has played only two full 16 game regular seasons since 2006.This is a benefit to Taylor’s game given that he is one of the most physical corners in the league.
The injury bug has hit Taylor as of late when he broke his ankle in the most recent game against the Ravens. In the 2012 season, Taylor has 32 tackles and 1 interception and has defended on 13 passes. In Taylor’s 10-year career, he has proven to be one of the most consistent players the Steelers have on defense racking up 454 tackles, 103 tackle assist, 14 interceptions, and 130 passes defended. Taylor’s durability and physical style of play is why the Steelers’ defense is what it is.
