Once upon a time, a former great Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback made the switch to safety and it paid great dividends as Rod Woodson was able to prolong his career as a very productive NFL safety.
Could Ike Taylor do the same thing?
While Taylor wasn’t close to having Woodson’s abilities as a corner, the veteran seems willing to follow Woodson’s career path to stay in the league a few more years.
Taylor said during an interview on Wednesday with Mike Florio on PFT Live, that he was training as if he’ll be playing again in 2015 and that he’d like to play two or three more years.
His days as a corner seem to have come and gone, but Taylor said he would be open to switching positions as well.
He also let it be known that he would be willing to play for another organization other than the Steelers, where Taylor has spent the first 12 years of his career.
That’s a complete 180 from Taylor’s stance after the season, where he said he only wanted to remain in Pittsburgh, whether it be in a playing role, or an off the field role.
It’s a good possibility that Taylor could follow former Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau to his next location, rumored to be the Tennessee Titans.
“If Coach LeBeau’s there, yes. If the time and money is right, yes,” Taylor told Florio.
The Steelers likely won’t re-sign the 34-year old. Taylor dealt with multiple injuries this season and finished with 16 tackles in five games.
Taylor, like a few other Steelers veterans, will be a free agent, when the NFL’s new calendar year begins in March.
