The Penguins will host the New Jersey Devils in uptown Pittsburgh tonight. Consol Energy Center and Mercy Hospital may both be appropriate locations for the contest.
After starting the season relatively healthy, the Penguins may be missing as many six players for their Metropolitan Division contest.
The Penguins will be without defenseman Kris Letang for the second consecutive game with a lower-body injury. Letang was placed on the injured reserve today, making him ineligible to return to action until Saturday.
Joining him on the injured reserve is winger Beau Bennett. Bennett is expected to miss another week with a right knee injury.
Fourth-line center Marcel Goc is questionable to play with a foot injury. He also missed Saturday’s game. Goc was injured in the first period of Friday night’s loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.
“It’s nothing that going to keep him out long-term,” Penguins head coach Mike Johnston said. “We’ll see how he is with pain tolerance over the next couple of days.”
Also questionable for tonight’s game are center Sidney Crosby and defenseman Robert Bortuzzo. Neither player practiced this morning after undergoing further testing for an illness.
“[Crosby] and [Bortuzzo] came in this morning and they were feeling under the weather,” Johnston said. “Our trainers sent them to get more tests, as is usually done.”
The Penguins recalled defenseman Brian Dumoulin and forward Scott Wilson from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League in case Crosby and Bortuzzo are unable to play.
Dumoulin, 23, is in his third professional season. The Penguins acquired him in 2012 as a part of the Jordan Staal trade. Dumoulin has two goals and eight assists in 22 games with WBS so far this season. He played in six games with Pittsburgh in 2013-14, recording one assist. Bortuzzo will wear jersey number eight.
“[Dumoulin] is a big, rangy defenseman,” Coach Johnston said of his rookie blueliner. “He skates well, moves the puck well. He’s earned the right to come up. If we have an opening tonight, then he’ll be the guy that jumps in.”
Wilson is a 22-year old forward from Oakville, Ontario. The Penguins drafted him in the seventh round of the 2011 draft. He played three years for the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, including a trip to the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh in 2013. Wilson has three goals and nine assists in 21 games with the AHL Penguins in his rookie campaign. Wilson will wear sweater number 43.
TONIGHT’S OPPONENT: The Devils signed veteran forward Scott Gomez on Monday. The 34-year old Alaska native spent his first seven NHL seasons the Devils, winning the Stanley Cup in 2003.
Gomez had 12 points in 46 games with the Florida Panthers in 2013-14. He has scored only 13 goals in the last four seasons.
“We need a little burst of energy here,” Devils head coach Peter DeBoer said. “He has a skill level. He has an ability to create some offense. He’s motivated.”
MINOR MATTERS: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (12-8-1) defeated the St. John’s IceCaps 1-0 on Saturday night. Jean-Sebastien Dea scored the lone goal for the home squad, a power-play goal in the early third period. Matt Murray made 22 saves for his second shutout of the season.
Today’s roster moves leave Wilkes-Barre with only 11 healthy forwards and six defensemen. Second-year winger Anton Zlobin will miss the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery.
The Wheeling (9-7) beat the Florida Everblades by a score 3-2 on Saturday night. Riley Brace scored two goals for the Nailers. Sahir Gill scored the game-winning goal. Eric Hartzell made 40 saves to earn the win.
