On Light Up Night it Pittsburgh, it was Kyle Okposo that lit the lamp last, as he beat Peguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury in the third round of the shootout to give the New York Islanders a 5-4 win in Pittsburgh.
Fleury will have to wait for one more game to earn his 300th career win. He made 31 saves while taking the loss.
Patric Horniqvist scored the goal that tied the game with seven minutes left in the third. Evgeni Malkin and Christian Ehrhoff assisted on the goal.
Brandon Sutter started out the night’s scoring by tallying the first goal at 1:13 of the first period. Paul Martin and Steve Downie assisted.
New York answered back with three goals in a matter of two minutes. It started out with Matt Martin scoring a slap shot against Fleury. In quick succession, Nikolay Kulemin and Ryan Strome scored to give the Islanders a 3-1 lead.
The Penguins bounced back and Blake Comeau came through by scoring at 16:34, assisted by Chris Kunitz and Olli Maatta, making the score 3-2.
Two more goals were scored in the second period, one by Islanders Nick Leddy, the other was scored by the Penguins Nick Spaling.
Chad Johnson made 26 save while earning the win for the Islanders.
Malkin and Sutter both missed their shootout attempts. Sidney Crosby scored a backhand goal in his attempt.
For the Islanders, John Tavares was stopped by Fleury. Frans Nielsen then went on to score and set up Okposo’s game-winning goal.
The game went the entire 65 minutes without a power play for Penguins. The Islanders ended had just power play that the Penguins ended up killing off.
The Penguins and Islanders will face off again on Saturday night in New York.
