INDIANA, PA – The IUP women’s soccer team scored a 2-0 win over non-conference opponent Wheeling Jesuit in their home-opener Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks came out shooting first as Sharee McCarty (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) took a shot at the net at the two minute mark. IUP out shot Wheeling Jesuit 14-2 and controlled the field for the majority of the first half.
IUP came out fast again in the second quarter. Tonya Fabian (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) put the Hawks on the board off a nice direct pass from Taylor Vladic (Duncansville/Hollidaysburg) at the 48 minute mark. After an hour-long lightening delay, IUP was given a chance to make it 2-0 with a penalty kick from Vladic, but goalie Holly Kraus made the stop. It was Kaitlyn Kaminski (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) who scored off a corner kick from Mandy Cerminara (Cranberry Twp./Seneca Valley) at the 53:44 mark to give IUP a 2-0 lead.
Mara Hricik (Moon Twp./Moon) started in net for the Crimson Hawks and notched two saves, Ashley Schoellkopf (Perkasie/Pennridge) played the last 11 minutes of the game and had one save. The Hawks only allowed one Wheeling Jesuit shot in the second half of play.
The Crimson Hawks (2-0), open up PSAC play against West Chester on Wednesday September 5, 2012 at the South Campus Field. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
