IUP’s starting point guard Devante Chance has earned PSAC West Player of the Year honors, capping off what surely was an impressive senior season.
Chance averages 16.2 points per game from his point guard position while dishing out 6.0 assists per night. Earlier this season he became just the fourth player in IUP history to score 1,000 points and dish out 400 assists in his career. He’s scored over 20 points six times this season and tallied 31 against Clarion to end the regular season recently.
Going through the list of other awards, Gannon’s A’Darius Porter won the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year award while Jaymon Mason of Edinboro took home PSAC West Freshman of the Year and Mercyhurst’s Gary Manchel was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year.
Porter was the key component of a defense that led the PSAC in scoring defense by allowing just 56 points per game as well as rebounding defense, collecting 26.1 defensive boards per game. Porter averages 7.5 rebounds and 0.4 blocks and had 27 steals this season.
Mason averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 rebounds this year as a freshman for Edinboro this season. He also dished out 3.1 assists per night.
Manchel was able to lead the Lakers to their first 20-win season since 2010-11. Manchel also won PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2011.
Joining Chance on the PSAC West first team was Gannon’s Adam Blazek and Gibran Smith, Slippery Rock’s Antonio Butler, Pitt-Johnstown’s A.J. Leahey and Edinboro’s Henri Wade-Chatman.
The second-team list included IUP’s Shawn Dyer, Cal’s Richard Smith, Gannon’s Raphell Thomas-Edwards, Pitt-Johnstown’s Ian Vescovi, Mercyhurst’s Gerrae Williams and Seton Hill’s David Windsor.
