With just 10 days until Opening Day, the Pittsburgh Pirates continued to trim their roster on Friday, cutting 12 players.
Among those who were cut included outfielder Jose Tabata, who was competing for the final bench spot as a fourth outfielder.
Along with Tabata, also cut on Friday include: Steve Lombardozzi, Charlie Leesman, Josh Wall, Bobby LaFromboise, Deolis Guerra, Brad Lincoln, Gorkys Hernandez, Brent Morel, Gustavo Nunez, Sebastian Valle and Deibinson Romero.
LaFromboise was optioned to Triple-A, while the other 11 were reassigned to minor league camp.
Of the 12 cuts, none can be viewed as a surprise with the Pirates roster practically set at this point.
Tabata’s demotion likely leaves the final bench spot to either Andrew Lambo or Jaff Decker. Both have a little bit of versatility and both are left-handed hitters.
After this round of cuts, the Pirates have 35 players left in camp, with right-hander Brandon Cumpton to be placed on the 60-day disabled list following Tommy John surgery.
There are only three non-roster invitees left in camp- left-handed pitcher Clayton Richard, right-hander Blake Wood and catcher Wilkin Castillo.
Unless there is a major surprise, the Pirates only have two bullpen slots up for grabs on the Opening Day roster in addition to the competition for the final bench spot.
