With the 2014-15 season to begin shortly, Pitt Panthers coach Jamie Dixon was busy over the weekend landing a big body on Sunday for the Class of 2015.
Dixon landed a verbal commitment from another junior college player, this one being 7-footer Rozelle Nix who is ranked among the best junior college prospects in the Class of 2015.
Nix, a Cincinnati native who’s a sophomore at Pensacola State College in Florida is the latest in line of JUCO players that Dixon has targeted recently.
Currently the Panthers have a pair of JUCO big men on their roster in Joseph Uchebo and Tyrone Haughton, both who are expected to be a part of the rotation this season.
Nix, who was also considering South Carolina and Loyola Marymount, committed to Pitt after an official visit this weekend.
He is listed as a three-star recruit and is Pitt’s second commitment in the 2015 class, with four-star guard Damon Wilson committing last November.
Nix currently plays for Pensacola State assistant coach Ontario Lett, who is a former Panther.
Lett, who played under Ben Howland at Pitt when Dixon was an assistant, confirmed that Nix made his verbal commitment Sunday night.
Nix will have two years of eligibility beginning next season and should work his way into a battle for playing time.
He also could be Pitt’s last recruit for a while.
With Cameron Wright and Derrick Randall graduating, the commitments of Nix and Wilson means Pitt will have no more scholarships to hand out for the 2015 class.
But Dixon has shown lately that he will reshuffle the roster so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him do so again, especially with the Panthers currently in the mix for highly rated big men, Cheick Diallo and Caleb Swanigan, along with guard Davon Dilliard.
If the Panthers can land one of them, they will certainly make room.
In the meantime it looks as if Dixon continues to add talent for the foreseeable future.
