I’m not a fan of using words like “tragedy” or “heroes” when it comes to sports or athletes. We all know who the the real heroes are and what the real tragedies are. That doesn’t mean that there are certain times when a collection of bad things will happen to your favorites teams that just leave you in a state of shock. For Western Pennsylvania, that day was Wednesday, June 6.
The news first broke that morning that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger would have to undergo minor knee surgery. Coming off an 8-8 season, the Steelers and its fans are looking for a bounce-back season. Most are realistic and know that this is a rebuilding year (by Steelers precedence, that is) and were counting on Roethlisberger to be the driving force. While he’s expected to be ready by training camp, it’s still enough to make Steeler Nation nervous.
In the afternoon contest against the Braves, the Pirates were nearly no-hit for the second time in the course of a week. To make matters worse, Wandy Rodriguez left the game with an injured forearm in the first and the Pirates were swept by Atlanta.
At night, the Penguins looked to steal a game in Boston as they were down 2-0 in the series. The Pens finally played its game and took the Bruins to double-overtime. The Pens went 0-6 on the power play and lost the game to go down 3-0 and one game away from elimination.
