It has been a busy week for the Pittsburgh Steelers prior to reporting to Latrobe for training camp on Saturday.
Just hours before the scheduled report time, the organization announced a contract extension for the man responsible for building this team, as general manager Kevin Colbert received a two-year contract extension.
The Colbert news came just a couple days after the team did the same for head coach Mike Tomlin as now both Colbert and Tomlin will be in Pittsburgh through at least the 2018 season.
“I am happy to announce that we have extended Kevin Colbert’s contract for two additional years,” said Steelers’ President Art Rooney II in a statement. “Kevin’s work and footprint on our football operations have been a key factor in our success. We are excited Kevin will continue to lead our personnel department for at least the next three years.”
The 58-year old Colbert is entering his 16th season with the Steelers and his fifth year as the team’s general manager. He joined the Steelers in 2000, and served as the director of football operations for his first 11 years.
Colbert has come under some fire in recent years as the Steelers have struggled, failing to win a postseason game since 2010.
But he has had his fingerprints on teams that since 2000 have won two Super Bowls, three AFC Championships, seven division titles, and earned nine playoff berths.
“I am truly grateful to Art and Mr. Rooney for the opportunity to continue my career with the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Colbert said. “It is with great anticipation that we enter into the 2015 season in pursuit of another Super Bowl championship.”
