The NHL named Pittsburgh Penguins blueliner Kris Letang the third star for the month of January on Tuesday. In 10 games, Letang scored three goals and finished with 14 points, helping the Penguins go 6-2-3 and regain a playoff spot.
Letang, along with Evgeni Malkin, represented the Penguins and the Metropolitan Division at the 2016 NHL All-Star Game on Sunday in Nashville, scoring a goal and assisting on a Malkin tally in a 4-3 loss to the Atlantic Division All-Stars.
Evgeny Kuznetsov, a center with the Washington Capitals, and Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford earned first star and second star honors for the month.
The Pittsburgh Penguins announced the signing of veteran power forward Tom Sestito to a one-year, two-way contract on Monday.
Sestito scored two goals and recorded four points in January with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on a professional tryout contract and boasts 10 goals and 18 points in 137 career NHL games. At 6’4”, 229 lbs., Sestito brings physicality and a willingness to drop the gloves to the lineup as opposed to offensive skill.
Expect Sestito to remain in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for the majority of the remaining season, but potentially see some NHL action as the Penguins face Eastern Conference foes 28 times in the remaining 34 games in the season.
