LaSalle ended Duquesne’s four-game winning streak at Tom Gola Arena with a 97-64 win. The last time LaSalle had a home win over Duquesne was 2006.
The Explorers (20-7, 10-4) jumped on Duquesne early, getting out to a 15-3 lead in the opening minutes. They led by 97 at one point in the second half en route to posting the most points by a Duquesne opponent since a 111-100 Duquesne win over Fordham in 2010.
Duquesne (8-20, 1-13) shot just 30 percent in the first half, which Ferry attributed mostly to LaSalle’s defense. The Dukes were able to rally in the final 20 minutes to shoot 40.6 percent, but by that time the Explorer lead was too large. They finished the game 3 of 16 from behind the 3-point arc.
LaSalle shot a dead-eye 62.1 percent in the first half. By 7:41 they were up 32-10, and come halftime they had opened up a 50-25 lead on the Dukes.
Derrick Colter scored a team-high 16 points, 14 of them in the second half. Quevyn Winters, who moved to within two 3-pointers of tying Tony Petrarca for the second-most 3-pointers made by a Duquesne freshman, had 13 on the night. Sean Johnson, who finished with 8, passed Petrarca to move to No. 24 on Duquesne’s all-time scoring list.
The final week of Duquesne’s season is forthcoming. The Dukes will play host to Charlotte at 7:00 PM this Wednesday for their last home game. Saturday they will head down to Virginia to take on Richmond for the final game of the 2012-2013 regular season. Duquesne currently ranks 16th in the Atlantic-10 conference. With a 12-team conference tournament, Duquesne has no chance of making it to the Barclays Center.
