New pitcher Zach LeBarron picked up his third win of the season tonight as the Washington Wild Things were able to pull off a 3-1 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers at home.
LeBarron threw another solid game on the hill, as he’s done all season since joining the Wild Things, as both teams bats seemed to be cold until a little after midway through the game. The Wild Things, though, struck first in the bottom of the fifth inning. After AJ Nunziato led off with a triple, Darian Sandford drove him in with a double. Sandford wasn’t on base long. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, he scored later on a fielder’s choice to put the Wild Things up 2-0.
With one out in the top of the 6th, LeBarron ran into the only trouble he’d seen all game. After allowing a single and a wild pitch, Emmanuel Quiles came to the plate with a duck on the pond. He didn’t hesitate to score him, scorching a double to bring the runner in from second. That would mark the end of the line for LeBarron.
Alfonso Yevoli would come in and pick up the final two outs of the inning, securing a one-run lead.
The Wild Things would add one more run on an RBI single by Shain Stoner, his 23rd RBI of the season, to lock up a 3-1 victory.
LeBarron pitched 5.1 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 run while walking five and striking out three. Nunziato finished 3-3 on the night at the plate.
With the win, the Wild Things avoided the series sweep. They’ll take on the Florence Freedom on the road tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 6:05 pm ET.
