The Pittsburgh Penguins (23-17-7) finished the first half of their season on a high note after defeating the New Jersey Devils (25-19-5) 2-0 this evening at the Consol Energy Center. Sidney Crosby continued his hot streak scoring a power play goal with Patric Hornqvist and Kris Letang finding an assist.
The Penguins opened up the game in the second period putting up a two-goal lead with a Phil Kessel wrist shot. Recently acquired Carl Hagelin picked up his 12th assist of the season and Derrick Pouliot managed to find his first of the season tonight.
Puck Hungry
If tonight was any indication of how the Penguins will be playing in the second half of the season, fans will be excited to see where head coach Mike Sullivan will be leading this team. This evening, Pittsburgh was able to give itself a lead to work with, relieving Marc-Andre Fleury, and offense of pressure.
The Penguins looked on a mission tonight putting their bodies on the Devils and scrapping for each possession. Pittsburgh’s power kill shined tonight killing all four of New Jersey’s power plays.
Matt Cullen played on another level and came close to putting up a goal or two against New Jersey. Someone who was thought to be on the last legs of his career, Cullen was a major offensive threat tonight beyond the usual players. If Pittsburgh’s supporting cast continues to play at a high level, the production of Letang, Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin will continue to rise.
Flower Power
Fleury was the biggest factor in tonight’s game as he faced 25 shots in his fourth shutout this season. Pittsburgh’s netminder made several plays that kept New Jersey off of the scoreboard. The Devils came swinging out of the gates, and if not for the unbelievable play by Fleury during that time, the outcome could have been much different.
Fleury also recorded his 42nd shutout, the most in team history. He looked dominate in the net tonight and the defense in front of him played outstanding in allowing only one shot on goal during their penalty kills.
Movin’ On Up
Sullivan has tried to get through to his team that he wants his squad to outplay the opponent, and tonight they did just that. With tonight’s win, the Penguins inch themselves further up the standings.
Pittsburgh has come a long way since the turmoil that ensued in December. The team will now enter the All-Star break with a three-game winning streak. The last time the Penguins had a major winning streak was back in November when they won four straight.
What’s Next
Following the All-Star break, the Penguins will be back at the Consol Energy Center on February 2 when they will host the Ottawa Senators at 7p.m.
