It isn’t rare that MLB players join a winter league team to keep in shape for the regular season back here in the states. The Pittsburgh Pirates’ left fielder Starling Marte was no exception. Marte went back to where he was born, the Dominican, to play for Escodigo in the Dominican Winter League this off-season.
Marte’s club swpet the Aguilas in the Dominican Winter League Finals, the equivalent to the MLB World Series, just a little less publicized. For the series, Marte went 11-21 and finished the entire postseason hitting .422.
In the regular season, he hit .304 with 2 home runs, batted in 20 runs, and had an on-base-percentage of .381. His play in the offseason earned him the award of Most Valuable Player of the Dominican Winter League Finals.
The young star just keeps adding accolades and has a very bright future ahead of him.
In other news, Pirates Kris Johnson was the best pitcher for Escodigo this winter. When they needed to win a crucial game to advance, Johnson was the ace on the hill. He pitched 6 scoreless innings in the final game.
