Micah Mason led the court with 20 points in securing Duquesne’s 67-65 win over Saint Francis (3-5) at Johnstown Saturday afternoon, hitting a jumper with two seconds left in play.
The senior guard shot 9-of-14 from the field and 2-of-5 from the arc.
The Dukes, now 8-2, record the best start since the 1979-80 season.
Senior guard Derrick Colter added 13 points for Duquesne, junior center Darius Lewis and junior forward L.G. Gill each contributed 7, and senior forward Jeremiah Jones and sophomore forward TySean Powell each put up 6.
Senior guard Greg Brown led the Red Flash with 16 points.
According to goduquesne.com, Brown sunk one of two free throws with nine seconds left to tie the game. Gill grabbed the rebounded and handed it to Mason, who dribbled down the right side of the floor and hit a pull-up 16-footer.
The Dukes led from the 8:21 mark of the first half until freshman guard Isaiah Blackmon drove to the basket, giving the Red Flash a 64-63 lead with 38 seconds left.
Duquesne outrebounded Saint Francis 43-31, enabling them to convert 12 offensive boards into 10 second-chance points. Powell grabbed 10 rebounds, setting a career high.
The Dukes host South Carolina State (5-5) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Palumbo Center.
