The Pittsburgh Steelers reported to training camp on Friday and unfortunately will have to begin work on Saturday without the services of one of their key new faces.
Safety Mike Mitchell, who was signed to a five-year, $25 million deal in the offseason, was placed on the physically unable to perform list to begin camp. Mitchell hurt his groin while working out and is unable to participate in team activities at this time.
After four years as a backup with the Raiders, Mitchell parlayed a solid season with the Panthers into a big contract with the Steelers.
With all the changes the Steelers have made over the past couple of years on the defensive side of the ball, the secondary is still considered a suspect unit and Mitchell is expected to come in and do big things, taking the position formally held by Ryan Clark, who had a disappointing 2013 season.
While Mitchell is playing out of position at free safety, once healthy he should turn into an upgrade for Dick LeBeau’s defense.
In addition to Mitchell, running back Alvester Alexander (groin) was also placed on the PUP list.
Both players can come off the PUP list when the team feels they are ready.
Two other Steelers did not report to camp yesterday, but both were excused absences by head coach Mike Tomlin.
Punter Adam Podlesh is staying with his wife until she gives birth to their child, and starting left guard Ramon Foster is coping with the death of his mother.
No timetable was given on when either player will report to camp.
