The Pittsburgh Pirates made their mark on Day 2 of the 2014 MLB Winter Meetings in re-signing Francisco Liriano to a 3-year/$39 million contract, pending a physical.
While it has not been confirmed with the team:
Huntington did not confirm Liriano agreeing to terms. “We are cautiously optimistic,” he said.

Pirates turning to the bullpen?
Rob Biertempfel of the Trib reports the Pirates reached out to a few teams about a trade for a Major league starter, but now that a deal with Liriano is all but done, the club is turning towards bullpen help.

With Liriano back in fold, #pirates seeking relief help and have some $$ to spend. They like Pat Neshek. — Rob Biertempfel (@BiertempfelTrib) December 9, 2014
Neshek was an All-Star last season for the Cardinals posting a 7-2 record with a 1.87 ERA in 72 games with 68 strikeouts and nine walks in 67 1/3 innings pitched. He made $1 million in a one-year contract with the Cardinals last season and should get more this year.
Pedro being shopped
John Perrotto of the Beaver Co. Times and the Sports Exchange reports that Pedro Alvarez is available for other teams to inquire about if the price is right.

In the article, Perotto reports:
“Though Alvarez has expressed a desire to return to third base, Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said he will be the first baseman in 2015 after Ike Davis and Gaby Sanchez were designated for assignment last month.”
