The Wheeling Nailers have signed their second player for the 2015-16 season, and it’s a familiar face to many Pittsburgh-area hockey fans.
Former Robert Morris Colonials captain Cody Wydo will re-join the Nailers for his first full professional season in 2015-16.
Wydo, 24, played in all 37 games for the Colonials in 2014-15, leading the team in goals (20), assists (23) and points (43). Over his senior season, Wydo became the program’s all-time leading scorer and first-ever Hobey Baker Award finalist.
After wrapping up his collegiate career, Wydo joined the Nailers for the end of last season, scoring a goal and an assist in his professional debut and finishing a nine-game regular season stint with six points and a plus-4 rating.
Wydo, a native of Allen Park, Michigan played for the Motor City Metal Jackets of the NAHL before his four years at Robert Morris.
He is the second player signed by the Nailers for the 2015-16 season, following leading scorer Derek Army. The Nailers have also giving qualifying offers eight players: forwards Riley Brace, Tyler Fernandez, Sahir Gill, Max MacKay, Patrick McGrath and Zack Torquato and defensemen Paul Cianfrini and Mike Slowikowski.
The Nailers will start the 2015-16 regular season on October 16 in Norfolk, Virginia and their first game in the newly renovated WesBanco Arena will be on October 24 against the Brampton Beast.
