It has been a slow start to the season for both the W&J and Waynesburg men’s basketball teams, as both programs are still in search of a winning streak in non-conference play.
The Yellow Jackets are off to a 1-4 start to the season and are coming off an 85-70 loss to Frostburg State. Five Yellow jackets scored in double figures in the defeat, led by 13 points each from Thomas Ellis and Byrum Louco.
Waynesburg has been led in scoring this season by junior guard B.J. Durham, who is chipping in 12.0 points per game.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday as they play the first of two PAC games this week. Waynesburg hosts Thomas More on Wednesday, before Grove City pays a visit to the Rudy Marisa Field House on Saturday.
W&J has had their struggles as well, as the Presidents are still in search for their first win of the season in six tries.
The Presidents competed last week, but dropped a road game to Juniata and a home contest to Muskingum by a total of seven points.
W&J has been in search of consistent scoring, playing without last season’s top scorer Nate Bellhy. They have been led in scoring this season by Mike Resnik (16.8) and Doug Johnson (12.3).
The Presidents will look for their first win of the season on Wednesday when they travel to Grove City for their first PAC game of the season.
Both team’s women’s programs are off to better starts than the men’s teams.
The W&J women are off to a 3-1 start, having defeated Pitt-Greensburg 69-56 on Sunday in non-conference action.
Junior Beka Bellhy led the way with a career-high 31 points.
Bellhy leads all President’s scorers on the season, averaging 19.0 points per game. W&J has also received consistent production from Valerie Dunlap, who is averaging a double-double early on with 12 points and 13.5 rebounds per night.
The W&J women are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Grove City for their first PAC game of the season.
As for the Waynesburg women, they dropped to 2-3 on the season after dropping back-to-back contests to Baldwin-Wallace and Allegheny, being outscored by a combined score of 166-108.
They have been led in scoring by freshman, and Chartiers-Houston graduate, Addy Knetzer, who has scored in double figures in four consecutive games and is averaging 12.2 points per game.
The Yellow Jackets will play prior to the men both Wednesday and Saturday when they host Thomas More and Grove City in PAC action.
