Despite what some fans may thing, Marc-Andre Fleury can fuel the Pittsburgh Penguins to success. And he did so Sunday night to even the series at one game apiece with the New York Rangers.
The ninth-year goalkeeper stopped 22 Rangers’ shots in the 3-0 victory to earn his franchise-record seventh playoff shutout. The shutout was also his first of the playoffs this season but his sixth overall of the 2013-14 season.
The win was the second in the past week for the Pens, with one loss sandwiched in between. The win, though, was a Game 6 clincher to send the Pens to the next round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
In that win, Fleury had 24 saves in 27 attempts, allowing three goals. But those three goals weren’t enough for the Columbus Blue Jackets to force a Game 7.
In addition to going 2-1 for the week, Fleury had a save percentage of 92.1 percent as the Pens head into Game 3 with the Rangers tonight.
For his efforts, Fleury is this week’s Pittsburgh Sporting News athlete of the week.
