The Pittsburgh Penguins have brought over defenseman David Warsofsky from the Boston Bruins on a one-year, two-way contract worth $600,000 at the NHL level.
Warsofsky, 25, is a native of Marshfield, Massachusetts had spent most of his career in New England, moving from Boston University to the Providence Bruins and on to Boston.
He’s an offensive defenseman, averaging over 20 assists per season at the AHL level. In 2014-15, he played on 40 games at the AHL level, scoring 4 goals and tallying 11 assists. He also played 4 games in Boston.
His three previous seasons were spent almost exclusively as an AHL player, and he was not only productive, but reliable, playing in over 56 games in all three seasons.
His stature (5-foot-9 and 170 pounds) may prevent him from being a full-time NHL option, but he is a viable injury fill-in.
He played three seasons at Boston University, winning an NCAA title in 2009. He finished his 113-game collegiate career with 22 goals and 46 assists.
With the Penguins trading away defenseman Scott Harrington in the Phil Kessel trade, and Brian Dumoulin being waiver-eligible for the first time, expect Warsofsky, along with fellow free agent signee Steve Oleksy, to have big roles on the blueline in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this year.
