After enjoying the week basking in their Stanley Cup Final win over the San Jose Sharks, it’s almost time to get back to business for the Penguins, as the offseason decisions on who stays and who goes have to be made soon.
Before the big free agency decisions get made, the Penguins will at least know when they will raise their championship banner, as the team announced on Monday that they will open the 2016-2017 season at home against the Washington Capitals on Thursday, October 13. The regular season begins on Oct. 12.
The Penguins also announced their preseason schedule, which will start Sept. 27 and Sept. 28 with back to back games in Detroit and Chicago, respectively. On Friday, Sept. 30, the Penguins will take to the ice at Consol Energy Center for the first time as they host the Chicago Blackhawks at 7 p.m. The Penguins will also play Detroit (Oct. 5) and Columbus (Oct. 8) before kicking off the regular season. The 4 p.m. game against the Blue Jackets will the sixth annual “Free Game for Kids” game, where the tickets will be dispersed to youth hockey players and other youth organizations to attend.
In other news, the Penguins announced that they have re-signed forward Kevin Porter to a one-year, two-way deal on Monday. The deal is worth $575,000 at the NHL level.
