The Pittsburgh Penguins cut 14 players from their training camp roster on Wednesday, bringing the team to 35 players in camp with three preseason games remaining.
Five players – forwards Dominik Uher and Kael Mouillierat and defensemen Steve Oleksy, Will O’Neill and Reid McNeill – have been placed on waivers. If they clear waivers tomorrow at noon, they will be assigned to the Penguins top minor league affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Eight players other players will await them with the AHL Penguins. Goaltender Tristan Jarry, defenseman Niclas Andersen and forwards Tyler Biggs, Anton Zlobin, Josh Archibald, Dominik Simon and Matia Marcantuoni were directly assigned to the AHL, while defenseman Barry Goers was released from his try out. He is already under contract with Wilkes-Barre at the AHL level.
Also released from his PTO was right-winger Tom Sestito. Sestito was brought in to provide some size and toughness to the Penguins group of forwards, but he was unable to lock down a roster spot and will become a free agent.
The Penguins will host the Detroit Red Wings tonight at 7 p.m. in their final preseason contest at Consol Energy Center. Their final tune up will come on Friday against the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Pens will still need to cut at least another 12 players to get under the 23-man roster limit – and the salary cap – before the season opens next Wednesday.
