The Pittsburgh Penguins (29-20-8) yet again played a weekend afternoon game today visiting the Buffalo Sabres (24-28-7) and facing former coach Dan Bylsma.
Youth continued to play a part in coach Mike Sullivan’s offense with Scott Wilson and Matt Cullen scoring goals to help propel the Penguins to their 4-3 win tonight. Natural contributors like Patric Hornqvist and Phil Kessel also made their mark in putting up goals as well.
The Sabres made a late push, putting up two goals in the final period, but the Pittsburgh defense was able to shut down Buffalo’s one-man advantage from pulling the goalie and leave First Niagara Center with a win.
Leading Early
An aspect that has kept the Penguins from winning some games this season was the inability to score early and hold on to the lead. Pittsburgh did just that today and the play of Marc-Andre Fleury prevented a comeback from happening.
Buffalo came back in the final period to score two goals and gave Pittsburgh a run for its money. The Sabres also had a good game in getting pucks to the net, notching 27 total shots on net.
Fleury, who missed last game after feeling ill before the game, came back today and looked good following his day off. His defense played much more disciplined than in the previous game, but did give up two power-play goals.
For the Love of Letang
Kris Letang had his hands in three of the Penguins’ four goals today. Finishing the game with a season total of 36 assists, the defenseman has continued to make his presence felt and has been a vital part of Sullivan’s offense.
Other teammates that have played along with Letang have become more of a potent contributor in this offense. Young talent once again was setup by Letang. Players like Wilson, who scored his third goal in as many days, has continued to step up and supplement the already fast-paced offense.
Finals Words
Pittsburgh has continued to grind out and win games when it most matter. Although slipping slightly in a few of the past 10 games, Sullivan has kept his team from falling behind the standings.
The discipline play of today’s game will be necessary, especially after the seven-penalty game seen a game before. The more Pittsburgh is able to play all five players, the more they will be able to generate more offense and continue climbing up the standings.
What’s Next?
Pittsburgh will continue playing on the road as they will face the Boston Bruins this Wednesday at 8p.m.
