It was announced this morning that goaltender Matt Murray has been recalled from American Hockey League’s (AHL) Wilkes-Barre/Scranton team. Current rookie of the year, Murray has the best save percentage in the AHL as well as the third-best goals-against average.
Currently this season Murray has played in 30 AHL games, winning 19 of those games played. In the beginning of this month the goaltender was leading the AHL league with a .938 save percentage, as well as maintaining four shutouts so far this season. Murray also places second in the AHL with a 1.84 goals-against average.
Playing four games in the NHL this past December, Murray had his first NHL win on Dec. 21 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. After being reassigned to Wilkes-Barre Scranton after Marc-Andre Fleury returned from injury reserve earlier this season, Murray left the NHL with a 2-1-1 record as well as a .938 save percentage.
Murray was drafted in the 2012 NHL Draft at Consol Energy Center. With the recall of Murray, the Penguins will have four of their top-five selections from the 2012 Draft including Olli Maatta, Oskar Sundqvist and Derrick Pouliot.
Beginning his NHL career in the 2013-2014 season, Maatta has a total of 54 NHL points. Sundqvist is currently in his first NHL season with the Penguins having played a total of eight NHL games. Pouliot has been recalled just this season from Wilkes-Barre Scranton after playing the 2014-2015 season with the Penguins. This season he has three NHL points.
It was also announced today that defenseman David Warsofsky will be re-assigned to Wilkes-Barre Scranton on a LTI conditioning assignment. On Jan. 17 Warsofsky was sidelined after receiving a concussion against the Carolina Hurricanes after a neutral-zone collision with a referee.
Playing 12 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins this season, Warsofsky has scored one NHL goal.
