On Tuesday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford announced that they signed forward Teddy Blueger to a two-year, entry-level contract. The contract begins in the 2016-17 season and runs through the 2017-18 season.
Blueger was chosen by the Penguins during the 2012 NHL Draft in the second round, 52nd overall. During the first round, Penguins players Olli Maatta and Derrick Pouliot were also selected, along with Matt Murray and Oskar Sundqvist in the third round. For the remainder of this season Blueg,er will be joining the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton team on an amateur tryout contract.
Originally from Riga, Latvia, Blueger was played for five major international tournaments, twice at the World Under-18 Championship and three times at the World Junior Championship. During the World Under-18 Championship, Blueger helped the team to win gold, and also lead the tournament in faceoff percentage and goals. During the World Junior Championship, he was named one of the top three players for Latvia.
Recently, Blueger completed his senior year with the Minnesota State-Mankato, where he lead the team in points and assists, and who acted as an alternate captain. This year Blueger ended the season with 35 points, scoring 11 goals in 41 games.
In his career so far, he has 108 points in 155 games, finishing with 10 power-play goals, 13 game-winning goals and two shorthanded tallies.
