Though the Pittsburgh Pirates struggled over the past week, there was at least one bright spot: Andrew McCutchen.
The reigning National League MVP started the season out in a bit of a slump. But now, the team leader has started to get into a groove.
The centerfielder picked up a hit in every game but one this week and currently has a small six-game hitting streak brewing. Monday’s game was his best game of the week, going 3-for-3 with a solo home run. From there, McCutchen got two hits Tuesday, two hits Wednesday and a hit in each game Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
In all, Cutch went 10-for-26 since last Sunday and is 10-for-20 during his hitting streak. In addition to his .500 average, McCutchen hit three home runs and drove in four runs over the six-six-game stretch. He’s now hitting .298 for the season, has four home runs and 14 RBIs.
For his strong week, McCutchen is this week’s Pittsburgh Sporting News player of the week.
