Oftentimes in baseball, fans rely on the big name hitters to come through for them. The pitchers sometimes go unnoticed in big game situations. This week, the Pittsburgh Pirates squared off with their division rival for one of the biggest series in the history of PNC Park. They took four of five from the St. Louis Cardinals, with possibly the biggest win coming on the shoulders of Brandon Cumpton.
Cumpton pitched 7.0 near perfect innings on Tuesday night, picking up the first win of his career. Cumpton allowed only three hits, onl walked one batter, and struck out five. He induced 14 ground balls and 7 fly balls on the night.
After the win, Cumpton became the first Pirates’ pitcher to throw seven shutout innings against a team that was at least 20 games over .500 for his first major league victory since 1990. That’s no small feat.
The win gave the Pirates their first doubleheader sweep since 2009 and their first at home since 2007.
