No Pirates player’s name has been tossed around more this week than Pedro Alvarez’s. First, he didn’t make the initial field in the Home Run Derby. Next, he gets put on the list and some fans hardly even realize it. But throughout the week, Alvarez has, once again, worked his way into the spotlight on this Pirates team with solid performances.
Alvarez registered a hit in every single game over the past seven days, something that is rare for the young power hitter. Of those six games, El Toro recorded multiple hits. For the week, Alvarez tallied 9 hits in 25 at-bats for a .360 average. He also drove in 6 runs over the course of the week and hit 4 home runs.
His two-RBI performance on Wednesday night led the Pirates to a 3-0 victory and while he didn’t record the walk-off hit on Friday night, Alvarez still produced two of the three winning runs.
Alvarez has taken his game up, as he’s been raising his batting average since the talks of him not being able to do anything but hit for power. This week his average went from .243 to .253. His OBP, SLG, and OPS have all risen this week, as well.
For his strong play and rising numbers, Pedro Alvarez is this week’s Pirate of the Week.
