The Pirates have already begun to mold the organization for next season as they signed RHP Josh Stinson to a minor league contract and acquired minor league INF Justin Sellers from the Indians for cash considerations.
The 26-year-old Stinson made Baltimore’s 2014 Opening Day roster and made seven appearances prior to being optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on April 28. He went 5-5 with a 5.48 ERA (85.1ip/52er) and one save in 22 games (13 starts) with Norfolk, winning five straight decisions from July 24 thru August 13.
Stinson also made six appearances with the Brewers in 2012 after being claimed off waivers prior to the start of that season. He was also claimed off waivers by Baltimore prior to the 2013 season and made 11 appearances with the Orioles in 2013, pitching a career-high 17.0 innings.
The 28-year-old Sellers posted a .254/.335/.642 slash line at AAA Columbus with 3 home runs, 18 doubles and a triple while knocking in 40 in 102 games this season.
Prior to this season, Sellers spent three years in the Dodgers organization and four years in the Athletics organization, who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2005 amateur draft. He is under contract till the end of the 2018 season and arbitration eligible after next season.
The Pirates also DFA’d pitchers Jeanmar Gomez and John Axford bringing the number of arbitration eligible players on the roster to 11.
