The Pittsburgh Pirates pulled off an impressive win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night after losing Monday night to them. However, Wednesday the team fell to the Astros with a 5-4 final score — with the Astros winning the series.
Pitching first for the Pirates was Gerrit Cole, and for the Astros, Collin McHugh was on the mound. Houston got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning, when Evan Gattis hit a home-run to score himself and Carlos Correa.
The Pirates finally got on the board when Jory Mercer hit a solo shot in the bottom of the third. Houston scored two more runs in the top of the fourth inning when Marwin González smashing a home-run to score himself and Correa.
In the top of the fifth, Jose Altuve hit a sac fly to the centerfield to score George Springer. Correa followed suit, hitting another sac fly to score Alex Bregman.
The Pirates countered in the bottom of the fifth when Starling Marte singled to center and Mercer scored. Gregory Polanco then singled to the left, scoring John Jaso.
In the top of the sixth, the Pirates pulled Cole and reliever Jared Hughes came in to pitch. The Pirates waited until the bottom of the seventh to score, this time with Polanco tripling to right, scoring Jaso yet again. (Chris Devenski was pitching for Houston.)
