Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Wilfredo Boscan and outfielder Gorkys Hernandez have elected to become free agents, according to Baseball America,
Boscan, 25, was used primarily in the Indianapolis Indians rotation this summer after signing a minor-league deal with the Pirates last offseason. The right-handed pitcher posted a 3.07 ERA appearing in 25 games for the Indians posting 10 wins and three losses while accumulating 86 strikeouts. Boscan was called up to join the Pirates three times over the course of the summer, but never appeared in a game.
Hernandez returned to the Pirates organization in 2015 after spending the past few seasons in the Miami Marlins organization. In his second stint with the Pirates, the 28-year-old outfielder played in 104 games in Indianapolis hitting .288 with a .771 OPS percentage for the Tribe. Hernandez originally became a member of the Pirates organization by way of the Nate McLouth deal in 2009. The outfielder made his Major League debut in May of 2012 for the Pirates and was traded to the Marlins in a deal that brought Gaby Sanchez to Pittsburgh at the trade deadline later that season. Hernandez appeared in eight games for the Pirates this season and was used mainly as a pinch runner.
These moves do not impact the Pirates current 40-man roster.
