The Pittsburgh Pirates today claimed infielder Dean Anna off waivers from the New York Yankees. The announcement was made by Pirates Senior Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington. Anna will be optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis.
The 27-year-old Anna was a member of New York’s Opening Day roster and spent 12 games with the Yankees, where he hit .136 (3-for-22) with a double, home run and three RBI before being optioned to Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre on April 24.
In 36 games with Scranton, he hit .192 (25-for-130) with four doubles, three triples, one home run and 14 RBI.
In 2013 Anna spent the entire season with Tucson (Padres’ AAA), where he hit .331 (165-for-498) with 38 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 73 RBI and 90 runs scored in 132 games. He led all Pacific Coast League hitters in average, ranked second in doubles and tied for fourth in runs scored and total bases (240) while being named to both the PCL mid- and post-season All-Star teams.
Pittsburgh’s roster now stands at 40 players.
