Saturday showed a youth movement in Orlando as the Pirates used several pitching prospects against the Atlanta Braves.
It was an up-and-down day for Pirates pitching, but the offense came through for a 9-6 win against the Braves.
Glasnow and Taillon a mixed bag
Those Pirates fans who made the trip were excited to see top pitching prospects Tyler Glasnow and Jameson Taillon pitch, however neither were able to have clean outings Saturday.
Glasnow threw 1.2 innings and had control issues throughout the outing. He threw 45 pitches, 22 of which were for strikes. Glasnow walked three batters and did not strike any batters out while allowing two hits and two runs.
He has been working on his off-speed pitches and this appearance represented a stumbling block to bounce back from.
Taillon pitched the third and fourth innings and allowed a run on two hits. He also walked one and struck out two batters in his appearance.
Taillon is looking to rebound from long-term injury that has sidelined him since April 2014.
Offense shows off in Orlando
It was another good day for the offense which struck together nine runs on 13 hits.
Sean Rodriguez now has a three game hitting streak and went 2-for-2 with a double in this game. Michael Morse also added a double and batted in a run for a second straight game.
Barring injury, both of these pieces will have large roles on the bench.
The Pirates depth also was showcased as Pedro Florimon went 2-for-2 with three RBI and Elias Diaz extended his hitting streak to three games with two hits.
