MLB.com put out their list of Top 100 Prospects tonight. The Pittsburgh Pirates have four prospects that made the list. Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon were the most notable.
Cole, the right-handed prospect, is one of the top prospects that is league-ready for the Pirates. Last season he went 5-1 with a 2.55 ERA in Class A, 3-6 with a 2.90 ERA in Double-A, and 1-0 in six scoreless innings in his only start in Triple-A. The Pirates haven’t said that they’ll be bringing him up to Pittsburgh right away but he brings excitement for the fans. He ranked 9th on the Top 100 list.
Ranking 15th, is another right-hander, Jameson Taillon. After struggling early on, Taillon has worked his way up to the 15th spot on this list. In his stint in Double-A, he won all three starts. He and Cole have been noted as being one of the most talked about pitching duo on the list.
Other players that made the list for the Pirates were shortstop prospect Alen Hanson and outfielder Gregory Polanco. Hanson batted .309 with 62 extra-base hits with Class A West Virginia. Polanco, playing for the same squad, hit .325 with 16 homeruns and 40 stolen bases. Hanson was ranked 54th and Polanco 65th.
The Pirates ranked 6th out of 30 teams in the MLB on the list. Teams are scored by how many prospects they have and where they are ranked at. The player rankings are based on things like how close they are to entering the league and how much upside they have.
