The Pirates racked up their 82nd loss of the season and completed their twentieth consecutive losing season with another heartbreaking loss. Wandy Rodriguez had another decent outing, but could not get credit for the win. He pitched six innings, struck out seven, and allowed two runs. Tony Watson and Jason Grilli each did fantastic out of the bullpen and had scoreless innings, with Grilli striking out the side. Joel Hanrahan came into the game with a 3-2 lead, but blew his fourth save of the season, along with his second loss. He allowed a leadoff home run to Xavier Paul to tie the game and the Reds would eventually take the lead on a Zack Cozart double.
The Pirates put their first two runs up on the board on a Garrett Jones two-run home run. It was his 26th of the season, which continued the best season of his career. Alex Presley doubled to lead off the fifth inning and would eventually take the lead on an Andrew McCutchen RBI single. That would be it for the Pirates offense though.
The Bucs did have a great chance in the bottom of the ninth to take the lead, but of course found a way to blow it. Aroldis Chapman came on for the save and walked Jose Tabata on four pitches. Chapman, on a pickoff attempt, threw the ball away and gave Tabata the chance to advance. Tabata got thrown out at third by a mile trying to advance which really hurt the Pirates chances. The next batter, Clint Barmes, walked and was followed by a Rod Barajas single. Michael McKenry and Starling Marte followed them up with strikeouts though, to end the game and preserve the 82nd loss.
It was the Pirates first loss of the season when leading after eight innings and the team extended their professional sport streak with their twentieth consecutive losing season.
