The Pittsburgh Pirates have optioned relief pitcher Wilfredo Boscan to Triple-A Indianapolis. No corresponding roster move will be announced until after the all-star break.
Boscan, 25, was called up from Indianapois on Sunday after the Pirates and Cardinals went 14 innings on Saturday night. He was brought in as help for the beleaguered bullpen, but the manager Clint Hurdle ended up not calling on the young Venezuelan despite starting pitcher Francisco Liriano only going 6 1/3 innings.
Jared Hughes, Antonio Bastardo, Tony Watson, Mark Melancon and Arcquimedes Caminero all appeared after Liriano in Sunday night’s 10th inning victory over St. Louis.
Boscan will return to Indianapolis, where he sports a 6-3 record and a 3.87 ERA in 76.2 innings. 15 of his 16 appearances have been starts for the Indians. The Indians have also reached their all-star break. The Triple-A All-Star game is on Wednesday, July 15.
With the All-Star break beginning on Monday, the Pirates will be able to rest up their relievers for the second half of the season. Melancon (43), Watson (43), Hughes (39.1) and Caminero (39.1) are all in the top 20 in innings pitched in relief in the National League.
Four Pirates: Melancon, A.J. Burnett, Gerrit Cole and Andrew McCutchen will represent the Bucs in the 2015 MLB All-Star game in Cincinatti, Ohio. The Home Run Derby will take place tonight and the All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday night.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday, July 17 when they start a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee at 8:10 p.m.
