The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced starting pitcher Gerrit Cole has been placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Aug. 25 with posterior inflammation of the right elbow.
Left-handed pitcher Steven Brault, tonight’s starter against the Chicago Cubs, has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis in the corresponding move.

Cole, who is 7-9 this season with a 3.55 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 20 starts, has struggled since the All-Star break, posting a 2-5 record with a 4.73 ERA in eight starts.
This is Cole’s second trip to the disabled list; he was placed on the DL in June with a right triceps muscle strain.
This’ll be Brault’s third career major league start in Chicago. He’s 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA in two career starts coming into Monday night. The lefty has thrown 10 innings in those two outings, and he’s allowed four earned runs on 11 hits while walking five and striking out eight.
The Pirates made roster move yesterday, as well, sending Adam Frazier to Single-A Bristol and recalling AJ Schugel to Pittsburgh.
