For Pirates fans, last year’s playoff run might have felt like a dream after breaking the streak and coming within one win of the National League Championship series.
This year should feel more like reality.
With a core of players that have playoff experience under their belt and a roster that seems to be getting hot at the right time, the Pirates might just have what it takes to extend their season well into October.
The offense has made positive strides this season improving their numbers from last year. Strong performances from guys like Jordy Mercer and Starling Marte helped strengthen the lineup while the outstanding play of Josh Harrison provided a boost — especially during DL stints from Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker, who both contributed in a big way.
The team ranked high in most major National League batting categories placing third in average (.259), OPS (.734) and home runs (156). They placed second in OBP (.330) and led the N.L. in walks (520).
The rotation had it’s shares of bumps and bruises, but recovered after the All-Star break to finish in the top five in most major categories. Gerrit Cole, Francisco Liriano spent time on the DL while Charlie Morton was shut down due to a sports hernia.
Those injuries would usually derail a team’s chance of success, but the strong performances by Vance Worley and Jeff Locke enabled the team to weather the storm.
The Pirates pitching staff ranked fifth in WHIP (1.23), third in ERA (3.26) and strikeouts (1261), second in batting average against (.238) and led the N.L. allowing the least amount of home runs (101). The bullpen also led the league in saves (55).
One major piece of the puzzle was catcher Russell Martin’s ability to work with the pitching staff during games. His overall WAR of 5.5 ranks eighth among all National League position players. That doesn’t include his pitch framing ability that aided in the pitching’s success in getting ahead of batters.
The playoff journey begins Wednesday night at PNC Park when Edinson Volquez — one of the best pitchers in the second half of the 2014 season — takes the hill.
