Sanchez still an outside option
The team DFA’d Gaby Sanchez yesterday after the acquisition of Sean Rodriguez. Sanchez — who is in his third and final year of arbitration — was expected to receive anywhere between $2.5 million to $3 million.
The Pirates could still try to re-sign Sanchez for less, if they want a platoon at first with Pedro Alvarez.
Hernandez back with Bucs
The Pirates signed three free agents to minor league contracts with invitations to Major League spring training, including Gorkys Hernandez, who spent time in the Pirates organization between 2009-2012.
Hernandez (OF) has a .275 career average (964-for-3507) with 166 doubles, 37 triples, 32 home runs, 316 RBI, 207 stolen bases and 536 runs scored in 935 games in the minor leagues.
Deibinson Romero (INF) has a career average of .262 (840-for-3208) with 171 doubles, 19 triples, 79 home runs and 470 RBI in 912 games in the minor leagues.
Sebastian Valle (C) has a career average of .256 (631-for-2469) with 143 doubles, 13 triples, 66 home runs and 343 RBI in 683 games during his minor league career.
