The fireworks won’t take long to get going in 2016 for the Pirates, as they’ll kick off their season at home against their bitter rival St. Louis Cardinals on Monday, April 4. It will be the first time since 2007 that the Pirates will host the Cardinals for the Home Opener.
It’s one of the marquee match ups for the Pirates, as the team released their 2016 regular season schedule.
The Pirates will get interleague action in early, as after a quick road trip after the home opener to Cincinnati, the Pirates will travel to Detroit for two games, before returning home for two more games in a home-and-home series against the Tigers.
Other American League teams visiting PNC Park next year will be the Los Angeles Angles led by Mike Trout (June 3-5), Robinson Cano and the Seattle Mariners (July 26-27) and the first place Houston Astros (August 22-24) led by Dallas Keuchel, Carlos Correa and George Springer.
The Pirates will in return travel to Texas, Seattle and Oakland for away interleague series.
The Pirates will end the season like the begin it, but this time they’ll be traveling to St. Louis to take on the Cardinals to end the year on September 30 through October 2.
Before heading to St. Louis, the Pirates will host the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs at home, ending the home portion of the 2016 season.
