The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed the following players from the 2014 First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made by Joe DelliCarri, Pirates Director of Scouting.
(Round 5) Michael Suchy – OF (6-3/220) Florida Gulf Coast University
Assignment: Jamestown
Hit .318 with 16 doubles, four triples, eight home runs, 10 stolen bases and a career-high 49 RBI in 60 games as a junior this year with Florida Gulf Coast University…Was named First-Team Atlantic Sun All-Conference and to the All-Academic team this season…Was the second-highest selection in Florida Gulf Coast University behind Chris Sale, who was selected 13th overall in 2010 by the White Sox…Is a graduate of Southeast High School in Bradenton, Florida.
(Round 6) Tyler Eppler – RHP (6-6/220) Sam Houston State University
Assignment: Jamestown
Was named a Second-Team All-Southland Conference as a junior this year at Sam Houston State University…Posted a 9-6 record and 3.20 ERA along with 67 strikeouts in 2014…Went 14-8 with 111 strikeouts in two seasons with the Bearkats… Transferred to Sam Houston State after playing at Texarkana Junior College…Was named the Most Valuable Player for his Navasota (TX) High School as both a junior and senior.
(Round 10) Alex McRae – RHP (6-3/185) Jacksonville University
Assignment: Jamestown
Was rated as the fourth-best prospect in the Atlantic Sun Conference by Baseball America at the start of the 2014 season… Was the 17th player in Jacksonville University history to be selected in the top 10 rounds of the draft…Went 5-7 with 69 strikeouts in 16 appearances (15 starts) as a junior this past season.
(Round 12) Tyler Filliben – INF (6-2/200) Samford University
Affiliate: Jamestown
Hit .293 with eight doubles, eight home runs and 43 RBI as a junior this year at Samford University…Also ranked fourth in the Southern Conference with five triples and third in the conference with 51 runs scored.
(Round 15) Eric Dorsch – RHP (6-8/265) Kent State University
Affiliate: Jamestown
Went 2-4 with a 3.56 ERA and 10 saves in 27 relief appearances (30.1ip) as a junior this year at Kent State…Was also selected by Cincinnati in the 21st round of the 2013 draft, but did not sign…Is from Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the 2009 WPIAL champion North Allegheny baseball team.
The Pirates have now signed five players from this year’s draft.
