This should not come as a surprise to anyone as Pirates management has publicly said they plan on going out of their comfort zone to try and keep the catcher in Pittsburgh.
Heyman previously reported that the Pirates extended a multi-year contract offer to Martin during the season which was turned down.
This, also, doesn’t come as a surprise because Martin will be offered a substantial amount of money in free agency as he is the best catcher, by far, on the market.
The qualifying offer is a smart play by the organization because if they were able to keep him long-term, the yearly amount could be around $15 million amount the offer is for and if he were not to stay in Pittsburgh, the organization would receive a draft pick as compensation.
