The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded outfielder Travis Snider to the Baltimore Orioles for left-handed pitcher Stephen Tarpley and a player to be named later.
Tarpley was the Orioles’ third-round pick in the 2013 MLB draft. The 21-year old played his second professional season at low-A Abedereen in the Orioles system in 2014. In 13 appearances (12 starts), he was 3-5 with a 3.68 ERA. He pitched 66 innings and had 60 strikeouts and 24 walks.
Snider was scheduled to make $2.1 million in the upcoming season and had been passed by young star Gregory Polanco on the team’s depth chart in right field. The Pirates also have Jose Tabata available to come off the bench as well as highly touted prospect Josh Bell waiting in Indianapolis.
In 2014 with the Pirates, Snider hit 13 home runs along with a .264/.338/.438 line and an OPS of .776 in 322 at bats, most of which were off the bench after Polanco made his debut mid-season. The Pirates originally acquired Snider for relief pitcher Brad Lincoln in 2012.
