The Pitt Panthers improved to 2-0 in ACC play with Saturday’s 26-19 win vs. Virginia and a couple players have earned recognition from the conference.
Pitt junior linebacker Matt Galambos and freshman strong safety Jordan Whitehead were honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference today after strong showings on Saturday.
Galambos was named the ACC’s Linebacker of the Week, while Whitehead received the ACC’s weekly rookie honor.
Galambos had a pair of quarterback sacks and a big third quarter interception against Virginia that he returned 51 yards to set up a Panthers touchdown. The return was the longest by a Pitt player in five years, when Ricky Gary returned a pick 80-plus yards for a touchdown against Syracuse. Galambos has 31 tackles, five TFLs and a team-high four sacks on the season.
Whitehead collected a game-high 12 tackles (seven solo) and continues to show he is a playmaker defending both the run and the pass. The true freshman leads the Pitt defense with 41 tackles on the year. He is averaging 8.2 tackles per game, which ranks ninth in the ACC.
The Pitt defense ranks seventh nationally, allowing just 264.6 yards per contest.
The Panthers have had at least one player honored by the ACC each week this season.
Pitt is back in action this Saturday when they travel to Georgia Tech.
