After a slow start in recruiting for the Class of 2014, Jamie Dixon landed his third recruit, this time getting an international surprise.
Shaquille Doorson, a 6-foot-11, 265-pound center from the Netherlands, signed with the Panthers on Friday. Doorson is 19 and announced his decision on the website of The Canarias Basketball Academy in Spain.
CBA is playing in the National Prep Showcase this weekend in New Haven, Conn., and Dixon is expected to be there to see him play.
Doorson could remind fans of former Pitt center Steven Adams as their paths are similar and the decision of Adams coming to the Panthers worked out well for both parties
Not much is known about Doorson at the time except the fact that he is very explosive around the basket, something that will be needed next season as senior Talib Zanna is graduating.
Like Adams, Doorson could be a project as he has only two years of playing basketball, but he is said to be a post presence with tons of potential.
CBA also produced a Louisville recruit in 7’2″ center Matz Stockman.
Doorson all but completes the 2014 recruiting class for Dixon, assuming that Detrick Mostella does in fact join the team this year.
He joins Hampton’s Ryan Luther and former Beaver Falls star Sheldon Jeter as the commitments for next year’s class.
The one noticeable thing about this class is that Dixon has targeted big bodies.
In addition to the 6’11” Doorson, Luther and Jeter both stand at 6’8″.
